The department of Assamese was opened in the year 1959 along with the inception of then Kokrajhar College. Renowned Educationist Late Ramani Kanta Sharma was the first Head of the Department under whose able leadership many students came out successfully and entitled the best job in various fields.

The Department of Assamese at Kokrajhar University offers a diverse range of academic programmes to meet the needs of students at various levels of education. The department provides a two-year Postgraduate Degree in Assamese, along with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Assamese under the NEP-2020 framework, structured as a Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP). In addition, Higher Secondary courses are also offered, ensuring a strong academic foundation and a continuous pathway for students pursuing studies in Assamese language and literature.Postgraduate/ M.A. (2 years)

Departmental Library
The Department has total 2400 books along with 2000 copies of central library. Apart from text book, Course recommended books, magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias etc.
Apart from doing routine classes, the faculty members of Assamese Department are also engaged in various extra – curricular activities. The Department itself has a literary society named Sahitya Chara which published a yearly journal ‘Dapon’ and it is the showcase of literary talent of both students and teachers. Again the literary society prepare a wall Magazine with the same title i.e. ‘Dapon’ in every year with a view to uplift the intellectual exercise of the students. Every year Major students of the department make an educational tour under the guidance of faculty members, especially to these places which are historically and culturally significant.
