Prof. (Dr.) Ganesh Chandra Wary, born on 4thMarch 1964, is a distinguished physicist, academician, and administrator who currently serves as the first Vice-Chancellor of Kokrajhar University, established under the Kokrajhar University Act, 2024.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Prof. Wary has contributed significantly to teaching, research, and academic leadership. He obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics from Gauhati University, specialising in thin semiconducting films, thermoluminescence properties of natural minerals in material sciences. His scholarly output includes over 75 research papers in reputed journals, several conference proceedings, and two specialised research books published internationally. He has also enriched Bodo-medium education through environmental texts, scientific glossaries, and translations for school curricula.
Prof. Wary began his career as a Lecturer in Physics at Dudhnoi College, Dudhnoi, Goalpara, Assam. Soon he joined the then Cotton College (now Cotton University), Panbazar, Guwahati, Assam and rose to become Professor of Physics at Cotton University, where he also served as Head of Department, Dean of Physical Sciences, Dean of Research & Development, and Pro Vice-Chancellor. He also served as the Academic Registrar of Bodoland University, Kokrajhar, Assam (19/03/2014 – 28/02/2017), gaining wide experience in academic governance and institutional building.
His academic reputation is reflected in his active involvement with professional bodies such as the Thermophysical Society of India (TPSI)—where he has served as Vice-President and General Secretary—the Physics Academy of North-East (PANE), and the Asian Thermophysical Properties Conference (ATPC), where he is a member of the International Scientific and Organizing Committees. He has represented India in academic forums across China, Japan, and other international platforms
